“CHECK OUT THESE BANNERS,” Matthew said as he unfolded a large vinyl sheet with the name of his party on it along with the cogwheel and pitchfork logo. “Isn’t that some dank shit? I’m like a kid on Christmas.” He was sitting in his usual cross-legged manner on a bed in a cheap hotel in Tennessee, showing me all the new merchandise the party had been coming up with. There were stickers, buttons, T-shirts, and, of course, the banner, which was big enough to more than fill the small hotel room. “All made in America, of course. It kind of hurts our image if we produced things in other countries. We actually had them done by a nationalist. It’s pretty cool.”

Earlier that evening I’d gotten to talking to a family from Mississippi who were drinking beers out of a cooler in the parking lot. They had told me that they were going to vote for Trump in the election not because he promised to bring jobs back to the coal industry but because he would be “tough on crime and tough on immigration, which by God the country needed because you saw these marauding hoodlums all over now, and I don’t even know what’s happening anymore.”

This was, in a sense, Matthew’s pitch as well. His was not just an economic argument about bringing wealth and dignity back to parts of America that sorely needed it; it was also an appeal to people’s tribal nature. According to him, white people were being shafted by every kind of minority, and the wily Jew was orchestrating it all. The world as he saw it was getting worse, and white people were getting the short end of the stick. I told him what the family from Mississippi had told me, and he wasn’t surprised. “People are coming around,” he said. “The majority of births in this country aren’t European American. There’s no way to stop this thing, even if you were to ban all immigration. Whites will be the minority in twenty-five years, and people are beginning to see it now, but more importantly they are starting to feel it. Nobody wants to be a minority. Being a minority fucking sucks. Look at how we’ve treated black people. Don’t for a second think that they’ll treat us any better, which is why people are starting to realize that we need to think racially.”

In Matthew’s eyes his adolescent vision of a clash of civilizations was coming true. Everything was fraying and becoming unstuck. Globalism and liberalism had become the new gods that white people worshipped, and they didn’t know that, by doing so, they were digging their own graves. His race was succumbing to white guilt on a global scale, where the white race, brainwashed by liberal values and notions of inclusivity, dove headlong into self-annihilation as they watered down their own gene pool. What’s more, the white liberals’ insistence that everyone is equal was eroding the very diversity it claimed to value. “Neoliberalism is the new colonialism,” Matthew explained.
